On August 12, the Department of Homeland Security finalized its Public Charge rule, which will go into effect sixty days from its publishing.
This regulation threatens LEGAL immigrants on their pathway to become naturalized citizens by penalizing them for using government assistance programs, rightfully available to them.
We feel that this rule will negatively impact families, presenting devastating consequences for millions of immigrants; this unjust ruling will only force families and individuals who are legally here in the United States to choose between naturalization and programs that can help them survive. It forces people to choose between their basic needs and their families.
We at La Paz believe that WE (the people of the United States) are ts best when our diversity is supported and celebrated. Regulations such as this undermine the contributions immigrants have made to our country.

Important things to note:
If you are in the US already, the rule won’t go into effect until October 15, 2019.
When it goes into effect, it will only apply to certain individuals on a case-by-case basis.
There are exemptions to the rule, including refugees and asylees.
Immigrants should not disenroll from benefits before speaking to a trusted attorney - it is very important they continue to get qualified assistance to protect themselves and their families well-being.
We know that the best way to build a strong country is to ensure that the families who live here—who are woven into the success of our communities—have the tools they need to thrive. When immigrants succeed, all our communities succeed.
We recommend families who have plans to apply for a visa or green card inside the U.S. before the effective date continue using the programs that they are currently signed up for.
