Become a La Paz Volunteer
La Paz offers several opportunities for individuals to utilize their gifts, talents, and time to support our clients and the work we do on behalf of the Latino community.
Our volunteer program is organized through our Community Circles initiative. Volunteers are vital to La Paz's outreach. By building meaningful relationships with Latino residents in the geographical areas where our volunteers live, work, and play, they help to strengthen the collective development of our community.
Most Common Volunteer Jobs
Below is a list of some general volunteer positions we have at La Paz. The frequency of all of these depends on the events occurring throughout the year.
Community Circle Ambassador
Each Community Circle has a lead team of volunteer ambassadors who assist the La Paz office with the oversight of their Circle's effectiveness in the community. They meet with and train new volunteers in their circle, connect with VIPs in the area (school principals, business owners, pastors, etc.), relay neighborhood news to La Paz staff, and be the eyes and ears for La Paz to help determine the needs in their particular area. Ambassadors are asked to commit to one full year of service and meet bimonthly as a team.
Translators & Interpreters
By far our greates need are volunteers who are bilingual (can understand and speak Spanish at an intermediate to advanced level). These volunteers help to interpret and/or translate at various La Paz and community partner events and workshops. We also utilize volunteers to assist with special translation and intpretation services at local public schools in order to enhance teacher to parent and student relations.
Special Event Volunteers
We utlize volunteers to help us prepare for, assist at, and break down the special events we host throughout the year in the community. Our special events include the Latino Leadership Awards, Community Latino Health Fair, Lunch and Learn events, Cultural Competency Trainings, and more.
To help our clients who are involved in one of our Women's Services, we often need volunteers to help care for their children during a program session.
Info Booth Volunteers (Tablers)
La Paz is often asked to participate in community events where we set up a booth and share about our mission and the services that we provide. We often ask volunteers to help us by serving as info booth representatives for La Paz. We have done these at job fairs, volunteer fairs, community events (such as the Latin Festival), and at schools.
This volunteer opportunity is designed for native English-speakers wanting to practice their Spanish and learn more about another culture. We bring together one of our Latino clients with a volunteer and engage them in a conversation aimed to assist each another in learning and practicing the other's native language. This helps our native Spanish speaking clients to develop their English language skills and learn more about the community from a local's perspective.
Lunch and Learn Hosts
Our Lunch and Learn events are part of our Latino Awareness Series purposed to highlight a subject of interest related to the Latino community. We like to offer these at various locations throughout the area.
We always have a lot of work to be done in and around the office, but we also utilize our volunteers in welcoming and engaging any office visitors and clients.
