2 Years with YHDP: Where are They Now?

Meet the YHPD department, a duo of young ladies working to fight homelessness in the Latino population of Chattanooga. 

The Youth Homelessness Demonstration Program is managed by a Case Manager, Annie Durán, and a Case Navigator, Jenny Pontarelli, who started the foundation of this program at La Paz two years ago and continue to fulfill its mission.

After much research about local resources in Chattanooga and partnering with other organizations, YHDP began taking cases of young clients with many different walks of life.

“My life was chaos before joining this program,” said one YHDP participant. Once she moved to the United States, she went to La Paz in need of stable housing and a support system. 

When the YHDP department meets with an individual for the first time, they listen to their situation, their needs, and their goals. Annie says, “Being able to sit down with them and learn what their priorities are and guide them so they can reach their goals, is the key mission to this program.” 

YHDP goes the extra mile by taking a holistic approach offering other resources to their clients, and prioritizing the overall stability of participants and their families. Gabriela C. is one program participant who was able to get access to many resources to support her growing family. “They helped me get SNAP for my baby, renewed my insurance, they offered me food when I visited, and referred me to a lawyer,” said Gabriela. “They have so much to give!”

Mellelyn U. is another client who trusted that YHDP was a team she could lean on and would uplift her when times were tough. “They gave me motivation above all. They made me feel valued as a woman and as a mother,” Mellelyn said. Another client mentioned that she would call Annie and Jenny when she felt drowned in problems and that “talking with them was always a big relief.”

After more than two years fighting homelessness in Latino youth, YHDP has housed almost 100 individuals. As Annie and Jenny have watched this program grow from day one, they feel a deeper commitment to ensure their clients reach the goal of becoming sustainably independent.

“At the end of the day, we just want to be there for our clients,” Annie said, “Be someone they can count on, and be part of their support system.”

2 años con YHDP: ¿En dónde se encuentran ahora?

Conoce al departamento de YHDP, un dúo de jóvenes adultas que trabajan para combatir contra la falta de hogar en la población de jóvenes latinos. 

El Programa de Demostración para Jóvenes sin Hogar (YHDP en inglés) es manejado por una Asesora de Casos, Annie Durán, y una Navegadora de Casos, Jenny Pontarelli, quienes iniciaron la fundación de este programa hace dos años en La Paz y continúan cumpliendo con su misión.

Después de mucha investigación sobre los recursos locales de Chattanooga y organizaciones asociadas con La Paz, YHDP empezó a tomar casos de jóvenes con diferentes condiciones de vida. 

“Mi vida era un caos antes del programa” dijo una participante de YHDP. Cuando ella se mudó a los Estados Unidos, ella fue a La Paz en busca de una vivienda estable y un sistema de apoyo.

Cuando el departamento de YHDP se reúne con un individuo por primera vez, ellas escuchan su situación, sus necesidades y sus metas. Annie dice, “Poder sentarme con ellos y aprender sobre cuáles son sus prioridades y guiarlos hacia ellos para que puedan cumplir sus metas, es la misión principal de este programa”. 

YHDP va un paso más allá al tomar un enfoque holístico ofreciendo otros recursos a sus clientes, priorizando la estabilidad completa de sus participantes y sus familias. Gabriela C. es una participante del programa que pudo tener acceso a varios recursos y apoyar a su familia en crecimiento. “Ellas me ayudaron a conseguir SNAP para mi bebe, renovar mi seguro, me ofrecieron comida cuando visitaba y me refirieron a un abogado”, dijo Gabriela. “¡Tienen mucho por dar!”

Mellelyn U. es otra clienta que confió en que YHDP es un equipo al cual ella puede apoyarse y le animarán en momentos difíciles. “Sobre todo, me dieron ánimos. Me hicieron sentirme valorada como madre y como mujer”, dijo Mellelyn. Otra clienta mencionó que ella llamaba a Annie y Jenny cuando se sentía ahogada en sus problemas y que “poder hablar con ellas siempre era un desahogo”.  

Después de más de dos años batallando contra la falta de hogar en jóvenes latinos, YHDP han acogido a casi 100 individuos. Como Annie y Jenny han visto este programa crecer desde el primer día, ellas sienten un compromiso profundo para asegurar que sus clientes cumplan sus metas de ser independientes de manera sostenible. 

“Al final del día, solo queremos estar presentes para nuestros clientes“, dijo Annie, “Ser alguien con el que ellos puedan contar y ser parte de su sistema de apoyo”.
