Meet Eddy and Her Legacy as a Volunteer with La Paz
Born in Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico, Eddy has left a lasting impact on the communities around her throughout her journey. As an immigrant, Eddy is passionate about connecting with the Latino and Hispanic community, which reminds her of her homeland. Through volunteering, Eddy has reconnected with her roots, helps her neighbors, and feels a sense of belonging in Chattanooga’s Latino community.
Her journey with La Paz Chattanooga began in 2008, helping with interpretation at family events and supporting low-income community members. Whether during visits from the Guatemalan Consulate or at Family Planning Clinics, Eddy always gave her time and effort for the well-being of her community.
Today, Eddy is the Language Access Coordinator for the City of Chattanooga. Her role ensures compliance with Title VI and prevents people from being discriminated against based on their race, skin color, or national origin. Her mission is to eliminate language barriers and ensure people have access to resources.
What motivated you to get involved with La Paz?
E: My children were in school, and I had time to help immigrants who were just beginning to arrive in Chattanooga. What I didn’t realize was how much I would gain from the experience myself. Volunteering not only taught me to give of my time, but it also helped me reconnect with my roots through the people I’ve had the opportunity to meet and help.
What is your favorite memory of La Paz?
E: One of my favorite memories was the surprise of being named Volunteer of the Year in 2018. I definitely didn’t see that coming!
Do you have a message for people who want to volunteer with La Paz?
E: If you’re interested in volunteering with La Paz, my advice is simple: figure out what you are passionate about, recognize the skills you can bring to the table, keep an open mind, and take the commitment seriously. And above all, get ready to meet a group of wonderful people!
If you’re ready to meet a wonderful group of people and help your neighbors in various ways, volunteer with La Paz Chattanooga! We have plenty of opportunities for students, people with varying levels of Spanish proficiency, those who need community service hours, and more!
