English Classes with Chattanooga School of Language

Picture this. You have moved to a new place with new people, and new opportunities, with the excitement of embarking a new journey. However, you find yourself stuck because you cannot communicate with others due to a language difference. With bravery and optimism, you decide to change the narrative and learn a new language.

This is the reality of many of our ESL students at La Paz Chattanooga. 

La Paz Chattanooga has hosted English classes led by the Chattanooga School of Language since 2021. Thanks to this partnership, students of all ages and different backgrounds are able to educate themselves in English to expand their comprehension and use of the language in their daily lives.

One of our longest-serving teachers is Leigh Griffith, who teaches Intermediate English, and has taught community members from all over the world throughout her career. 

“I’ve had a lot of experience teaching adult ESL and I’ve taught students from all over,” said Leigh, who has taught students from Afghanistan, Russia, Korea, Mexico, Brazil and more before teaching at La Paz with CSL.

Thanks to her passion for teaching and diverse group of students, she has crafted lesson plans tailored for her students’ heritage and level of English. 

One of her students is Lilian Castrejón, who recently finished her fourth cycle taking Intermediate English with Griffith said, “my English has improved a lot. I can understand and speak it much better now.”

With games, group activities and videos, the ESL classes are a place where students can come together, set aside their responsibilities, and learn English from each other as a community. 

“She would make activities where all of us could participate,” Lilian said. Regardless of cultural differences and comprehension levels, every student improved their English skills while feeling seen and heard. 

However, it is not only the students who learn from the teacher, the teacher also learns from their students. 

Griffith has grown as a person thanks to the values that her students teach her. “They teach me to be patient, different ways of seeing the world, different ways of raising a family, different faiths… and they all bring that to the class.”

By creating an inclusive educational environment, the confidence of all individuals improves. Positive reinforcement allows us to take on greater challenges and prepare for our next goal, no matter how big or small. 

In the case of Lilian, she can now make doctor’s appointments for her daughter by herself. She said “I feel more freedom,” now with the ability of communicating with new people, in a new place, with new opportunities.

“The way that your world opens up when you learn another language and the value of seeing other people’s perspectives through that language,” can be transformative, said Griffith. She believes that every person deserves to have the ability of communicating with their community.

Imagina esto. Te has mudado a un nuevo lugar con nuevas personas, nuevas oportunidades, con la emoción de que se avecina una nueva aventura. Sin embargo, te encuentras estancado porque no puedes comunicarte con los demás debido a una diferencia lingüistica. Con valor y optimismo, decides cambiar esta historia y aprender un nuevo idioma. 

Esta es la realidad de muchos de nuestros estudiantes de inglés en La Paz Chattanooga.

La Paz Chattanooga ha organizado clases de inglés liderado por Chattanooga School of Language desde el 2021. Gracias a esta colaboración, estudiantes de todas las edades y diferentes orígenes pueden educarse en inglés para ampliar su comprensión del idioma en sus vidas diarias. 

Una de las maestras que ha trabajado con nosotros más tiempo es Leigh Griffith, quien enseña Inglés Intermedio, ha enseñado a miembros de la comunidad de todo el mundo durante su carrera. 

“Tengo mucha experiencia enseñado inglés para adultos y he tenido estudiantes de todas partes”, quien le ha enseñado a estudiantes de Afganistán, Rusia, Corea, México, Brasil y más antes de ser maestra en La Paz con CSL.

Gracias a su pasíon por la enseñanza y su diverso grupo de estudiantes, ella ha creado lecciones adaptadas para la cultura de sus estudiantes y su nivel de inglés.

Una de sus estudiantes es Lilian Castrejón, quien recientemente terminó su cuarto ciclo de Inglés Intermedio con Griffith, dijo “He mejorado mucho en inglés. Puedo entender lo que me dicen y hablarlo más”.

Con juegos, actividades grupales y videos, la clases de inglés son un lugar en donde los estudiantes se reúnen, dejan de lado sus responsabilidades, y aprenden inglés entre ellos como una comunidad.

“Ella hacía dinámicas para que todos pudiéramos participar”, Lilian dijo. Sin importar las diferencias culturales y niveles de comprensión, cada estudiante mejoro su conocimiento del inglés mientras se sentían reconocidos y escuchados. 

Sin embargo, no solo los estudiantes aprenden de la maestra, la maestra también aprende de sus estudiantes.

Griffith ha crecido como persona gracias a los valores que sus estudiantes le enseñan. “Ellos me enseñan a ser paciente, maneras diferentes de ver el mundo, maneras diferentes de criar una familia, religiones diferentes… y todo lo traen a clase”.

Creando un ambiente inclusivo y educativo, la seguridad de todos los individuos mejora. El refuerzo positivo nos permite intentar mayores desafíos y prepatarnos para nuestra siguiente meta, sin importar el tamaño.

En el caso de Lilian, ella puede hacer citas para el doctor para su hija ella sola. Ella dijo “siento más libertad”, ahora que tiene la habilidad de comunicarse con nuevas personas, en un nuevo lugar, con nuevas oportunidades.

“La manera en la que tu mundo se abre cuando aprendes un nuevo idioma y el valor de ver la perspectiva de otros a través del lenguaje” puede ser transformadora, dijo Griffith. Ella cree que cada persona merece la habilidad de comunicarse con su comunidad.
