The La Paz staff has the great honor of connecting with countless community members through our services and programs. These individuals, all remarkable in their own ways, inspire our daily work and motivate us to create impactful ways to connect with each other.

Liseth R., a communications professional, aspiring realtor, and fearless mama bear, shares with us the story of her own road to La Paz, and how she paved the way for connection, generosity, and transformation.

Her advice? Dream big and commit to learning something new every day.

When Liseth first begins telling her story, she smiles with a mix of pride and humility. She introduces herself simply, the way many hardworking mothers do: “I’m a mom of three beautiful children, a dreamer, and now, a resident of the United States.” Behind those words is a journey filled with challenges, transformation, and the power of community—the kind of community she eventually found through La Paz Chattanooga.

Liseth arrived from Colombia with a clear hope guiding her every day. She dreamed that her children would grow up bilingual and prepared for opportunities she herself never had access to. She wanted them to feel confident in two worlds, two languages, two cultures. But the path to get there was far from easy.

Her family’s opportunity to travel to the United States came unexpectedly. After her children survived a serious accident back home, the insurance payout opened a door she had never imagined. It was a moment filled with fear but also an unexpected chance for a new beginning. Liseth chose courage, packed what she could, and brought her family here.

Once she arrived, she quickly realized that being a mother in the United States was very different from being a mother in her own country. She was suddenly navigating an unfamiliar credit system, trying to understand how schools and institutions worked, and doing it all in a language she did not yet speak. Every phone call felt intimidating. Every form seemed impossible to understand. Every small task took extraordinary effort.

“Arriving without the language is so difficult,” she recalls. “But there are resources, there are people who appear like angelitos that God places in your path. They guide you when you most need it.” One of those guides, she says, was La Paz.

The first time she walked into La Paz Chattanooga, she felt disoriented and unsure if she would even be able to stay in the city. She didn’t know where to begin. In that moment, La Paz offered her what she had been searching for: direction and trust. 

Staff welcomed her, listened to her questions, and connected her with an immigration attorney who provided a free consultation. That advice helped her understand the steps she needed to take to secure her family’s future. For the first time in months, she walked away feeling steady and hopeful.

This is part of what La Paz does every day. We help families navigate difficult systems. We advocate, educate, include, and believe alongside the people we serve. For Liseth, that support was the beginning of a new chapter.

She began attending English classes at La Paz, finding comfort in learning alongside other parents with stories like hers. Her daughter joined the children’s dance program, discovering confidence, joy, and new friendships. As Liseth became more involved, her sense of belonging deepened. “I used to think maybe someday I could be part of La Paz,” she says. After reflecting for a moment, she adds, “I already am.”

With growing stability came new possibilities. After months of practice and courage, Liseth applied for a role at Radio Fiesta Latina. She remembers how nervous she felt, convinced she wouldn’t get the job. And then the call came. She had been selected.

“Being a communicator is not just talking,” she explains. “It’s connecting with people.” Through her work at the radio station, she now supports others much like she once needed support. Listeners approach her with questions about housing, insurance, or financial decisions. She shares information freely, motivated by gratitude for the guidance she once received herself.

What inspires her most is the chance to unite the Latino community in Chattanooga. “I want people to know about the resources available to them,” she says. Her work reflects the same values that guide La Paz: empowerment, connection, and the belief that every person deserves the chance to thrive.

Her personal growth is undeniable. “I wanted to challenge myself, to be independent, to be an entrepreneur, to not depend on anyone,” she says. 

“I feel fulfilled,” Liseth says. “I’m leaving my children a legacy of helping others.”

When she talks about the future, her eyes shine. “While we’re alive, we have to keep dreaming,” she says. And she believes those dreams can come true, not only for her, but for every family who arrives in Chattanooga looking for a place to belong.

 Liseth R., profesional de comunicaciones, futura agente de bienes raíces y una mamá oso, comparte con nosotros la historia de su propio camino hacia La Paz, y cómo abrió paso a la conexión, la generosidad y la transformación. 

Su consejo: soñar en grande y comprometerse a aprender algo nuevo cada día.

Cuando Liseth comienza a contar su historia, sonríe con una mezcla de orgullo y humildad. Se presenta de forma sencilla, como muchas madres trabajadoras: “Soy mamá de tres hermosos niños, una soñadora y ahora, residente de los Estados Unidos”. Detrás de esas palabras hay un camino lleno de retos, cambios profundos y la fuerza de una comunidad, la misma comunidad que eventualmente encontró a través de La Paz Chattanooga.

Liseth llegó de Colombia guiada por una esperanza clara. Soñaba con que sus hijos crecieran siendo bilingües y preparados para oportunidades a las que ella nunca tuvo acceso. Quería que se sintieran seguros en dos mundos, dos idiomas y dos culturas. Pero el camino no fue fácil.

La oportunidad de viajar a Estados Unidos llegó de forma inesperada. Después de que sus hijos sobrevivieran un accidente grave en Colombia, el pago del seguro abrió una puerta que ella jamás imaginó. Fue un momento lleno de miedo, pero también una posibilidad inesperada de comenzar de nuevo. Liseth eligió el valor, empacó lo esencial y trajo a su familia.

Ya en Estados Unidos, se dio cuenta rápidamente de que ser madre aquí era muy diferente a ser madre en su propio país. De pronto tuvo que navegar un sistema de crédito completamente nuevo, entender cómo funcionaban las escuelas y las instituciones, y hacerlo todo en un idioma que aún no hablaba. Cada llamada telefónica daba miedo. Cada formulario parecía imposible de llenar. Cada tarea sencilla requería un esfuerzo enorme.

“Llegar sin el idioma es tan difícil”, recuerda. “Pero hay recursos, hay personas que aparecen como angelitos que Dios pone en tu camino. Te guían cuando más lo necesitas”. Una de esas guías, dice ella, fue La Paz.

La primera vez que entró a La Paz Chattanooga, se sentía desorientada y sin saber si siquiera podría quedarse en la ciudad. No sabía por dónde empezar. En ese momento, La Paz le ofreció algo que había estado buscando: dirección y confianza. El equipo la recibió con calidez, escuchó sus preguntas y la conectó con un abogado de inmigración que le brindó una consulta gratuita. Ese consejo le ayudó a comprender los pasos necesarios para asegurar el futuro de su familia. Por primera vez en meses, salió sintiéndose estable y esperanzada.

Esto es parte de lo que La Paz hace todos los días. Ayudamos a las familias a navegar sistemas complicados. Acompañamos, educamos, incluimos y creemos junto a quienes servimos. Para Liseth, ese apoyo marcó el inicio de un nuevo capítulo.

Comenzó a asistir a las clases de inglés en La Paz, encontrando consuelo al aprender junto a otros padres con historias parecidas a la suya. Su hija se unió al programa de baile infantil, donde descubrió confianza, alegría y nuevas amistades. A medida que Liseth se involucraba más, su sentido de pertenencia crecía. “Antes pensaba que tal vez algún día podría ser parte de La Paz”, dice. Tras una pausa breve, añade: “Ya soy parte de La Paz”.

Con mayor estabilidad llegaron nuevas posibilidades. Después de meses de práctica y valentía, Liseth aplicó a un puesto en Radio Fiesta Latina. Recuerda lo nerviosa que estaba, convencida de que no sería seleccionada. Luego llegó la llamada. Había obtenido el puesto.

“Ser comunicadora no es solo hablar”, explica. “Es conectarse con las personas”.

En su trabajo en la radio, ahora apoya a otras personas tal como ella necesitó apoyo alguna vez. Oyentes se le acercan con preguntas sobre vivienda, seguros o decisiones financieras. Ella comparte información con generosidad, motivada por la gratitud del apoyo que un día recibió.

Lo que más la inspira es la posibilidad de unir a la comunidad latina en Chattanooga. “Quiero que la gente sepa sobre los recursos que existen”, dice. Su trabajo refleja los valores que guían a La Paz: empoderamiento, conexión y la convicción de que cada persona merece la oportunidad de prosperar.

Su crecimiento personal es evidente. “Quería desafiarme, ser independiente, ser emprendedora, no depender de nadie”, cuenta. “

Me siento plena”, afirma Liseth. “Le estoy dejando a mis hijos un legado de ayuda”.

Cuando habla del futuro, sus ojos brillan. “Mientras estemos vivos, tenemos que seguir soñando”, dice. Y cree firmemente que esos sueños pueden hacerse realidad, no solo para ella, sino para cada familia que llega a Chattanooga buscando un lugar donde pertenecer.
