At La Paz Chattanooga, we believe a diverse community is a strong community. This Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month, we’re honored to shine a light on the staff members who embody our mission — to empower and engage Chattanooga’s Latino population through advocacy, education, and inclusion. Across this series, you’ll meet individuals whose passion, stories, and commitment help shape our work and the relationships we build.

Each of our team brings something unique to our shared vision of a thriving Latino community within an inclusive Chattanooga. As we share these spotlights, we invite you to get to know the people whose voices, backgrounds, and dedication help us serve with integrity, reduce barriers, and strengthen connections across our community.

Though not of Latino heritage herself, Stacy has been a dedicated ally and champion of our community, working tirelessly alongside La Paz since the very beginning to uplift and celebrate Latino voices this Hispanic Heritage Month and beyond.

Q: Can you share a little about your professional background? 

A: After graduating with a communications degree and working three graphic design jobs, I transitioned to the nonprofit sector. I worked at the Homeless Coalition for three years and then lived in Mexico for a year. When I returned home, I was hired at First Tennessee Bank to build their first Hispanic Banking program. At the same time, I was recruited to be on the board of directors for La Paz. I’ve been involved with the organization since that time (2004). I became the first Executive Director in 2008. 

Q: What led you to join the team at La Paz? How long have you been with the organization? 

A: I found La Paz in 2004 after living in Mexico for a year and suffering from a pretty bad case of culture shock. Finding La Paz was like coming home — my love for the culture and language, in my hometown, where my family and friends were — it was the perfect combination for me. 

Q: Tell me a little about the work you do each day. Feel free to share a story or vignette that highlights your contributions to the team! 

A: My work has shifted over the years from answering the phone and designing the website and brochures in the beginning to writing grants and coordinating events to leadership development, strategy, and fundraising. Today, I support all of the amazing things that happen at La Paz by sharing our success stories with foundations, corporate and individual partners, meeting with elected officials, and working to ensure we have a thriving working culture and a place of belonging for all those who walk through our doors. 

Q: What excites you the most about the future of La Paz and the work you do? 

A: La Paz has built a solid foundation of trust — within the Latino community, but also the nonprofit and corporate sectors. We are now positioned to take what we’ve built, lean into that privilege and position, and advocate for the community on a larger level. We are ready to take on new challenges, but remain flexible to meet the needs of the community. La Paz will continue to be a place of belonging — we will walk alongside the community to advocate for, highlight contributions, and promote inclusion. 

Q: What’s one thing you wish every member of the Chattanooga community knew about La Paz or the people it serves? 

A: I wish everyone could take a peek inside our organization and see the amazing contributions each of our team members makes. It blows me away every day! And, the communities we serve are just as inspiring.

Q: Finish this sentence: When I’m not at work, I can be found at ______

A: One of my kids’ sporting events (cross country, basketball, baseball, or track). My husband and I are always at a cross country or track meet, baseball or basketball game, or hanging out with our kiddos.

Aunque ella misma no tiene herencia latina, Stacy ha sido una aliada comprometida y una defensora de nuestra comunidad, trabajando incansablemente junto a La Paz desde el principio para elevar y celebrar las voces latinas en este Mes de la Herencia Hispana y más allá.

P: ¿Puedes contarnos un poco sobre tu trayectoria profesional?

R: Después de graduarme con un título en comunicaciones y trabajar en tres empleos de diseño gráfico, hice la transición al sector sin fines de lucro. Trabajé en la Homeless Coalition durante tres años y luego viví en México por un año. Cuando regresé, fui contratada en First Tennessee Bank para crear su primer programa de Banca Hispana. Al mismo tiempo, me invitaron a formar parte de la junta directiva de La Paz. He estado vinculada a la organización desde entonces (2004). Me convertí en la primera Directora Ejecutiva en el 2008.

P: ¿Qué te llevó a unirte al equipo de La Paz? ¿Cuánto tiempo llevas con la organización?

R: Encontré a La Paz en 2004, después de vivir en México un año y sufrir un fuerte choque cultural al regresar. Encontrar a La Paz fue como volver a casa: mi amor por la cultura y el idioma, en mi ciudad natal, donde estaba mi familia y mis amigos — fue la combinación perfecta para mí.

P: Cuéntame un poco sobre el trabajo que realizas cada día. ¡Siéntete libre de compartir una historia o anécdota que destaque tus aportes al equipo!

R: Mi trabajo ha cambiado con los años: al principio respondía llamadas, diseñaba el sitio web y los folletos; luego pasé a escribir propuestas de fondos y coordinar eventos; después, a trabajar en desarrollo de liderazgo, estrategia y recaudación de fondos. Hoy, apoyo todas las cosas increíbles que suceden en La Paz compartiendo nuestras historias de éxito con fundaciones, socios corporativos e individuales, reuniéndome con funcionarios electos y trabajando para asegurar que tengamos una cultura laboral próspera y un lugar de pertenencia para todas las personas que cruzan nuestras puertas.

P: ¿Qué es lo que más te emociona sobre el futuro de La Paz y el trabajo que realizas?

R: La Paz ha construido una base sólida de confianza — dentro de la comunidad latina, pero también en los sectores sin fines de lucro y corporativo. Ahora estamos en posición de aprovechar lo que hemos construido, apoyarnos en ese privilegio y posición, y abogar por la comunidad a un nivel más amplio. Estamos listos para enfrentar nuevos desafíos, pero también para mantenernos flexibles y responder a las necesidades de la comunidad. La Paz seguirá siendo un lugar de pertenencia — caminaremos junto a la comunidad para abogar, resaltar sus contribuciones y promover la inclusión.

P: ¿Qué es algo que desearías que cada miembro de la comunidad de Chattanooga supiera sobre La Paz o sobre las personas a las que sirve?

R: Me encantaría que todos pudieran asomarse dentro de nuestra organización y ver las contribuciones tan increíbles que hace cada integrante de nuestro equipo. ¡Me impresiona todos los días! Y las comunidades a las que servimos son igual de inspiradoras.

P: Termina esta frase: Cuando no estoy en el trabajo, se me puede encontrar en ______

R: En alguno de los eventos deportivos de mis hijos (campo traviesa, baloncesto, béisbol o atletismo). Mi esposo y yo siempre estamos en una competencia de campo traviesa o atletismo, un juego de béisbol o baloncesto, o simplemente pasando tiempo con nuestros hijos.
