This Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month, we’re honored to shine a light on the staff members who embody our mission — to empower and engage Chattanooga’s Latino population through advocacy, education, and inclusion. Q: Can you share a little about your professional background? 

A: I hold a JD from the University of Tennessee and am a proud alumna of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. My background includes both legal and community-focused experience through my work with the Georgia Legal Services Program and the University of Tennessee Legal Clinic.

Q: What led you to join the team at La Paz? How long have you been with the organization? 

A: I have been working with La Paz since 2022, where I had the opportunity to develop a legal access program for the organization. I was driven by the desire to gain hands-on experience and to create a model that could be replicated in other school systems, one that would make a meaningful impact not only in the broader community but also in the lives of students. With my background in supporting immigrant youth, my legal training, and my understanding of the intersectionality of community services, this work felt like a natural and purposeful fit. 

Q: Tell me a little about the work you do each day. Feel free to share a story or vignette that highlights your contributions to the team! 

A: I lead the Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS) Sponsorship Program, which supports unaccompanied youth in the Hamilton County school system by connecting them with immigration attorneys who can guide them through the complexities of their legal cases. Immigration law can be incredibly challenging to navigate, and I’m passionate about helping students understand the legal resources available to them. The youth I work with are often among the most vulnerable, many having faced significant trauma. It’s deeply fulfilling to serve as a trusted presence in their lives, someone they can rely on not only for legal guidance, but also as a consistent and supportive member of their community

Q: What excites you the most about the future of La Paz and the work you do? 

A: Bringing this program to life and seeing students benefit from it gives me hope that they will have the opportunity to build safe, stable lives in the United States. As for La Paz, I’m excited about our continued growth and optimistic about our ability to reach more clients and create an even greater impact in the community.

Q: What’s one thing you wish every member of the Chattanooga community knew about La Paz or the people it serves? 

A: Our work is client-led, and the programs we offer are shaped by the current challenges facing the Latino community in Chattanooga. We stay responsive and proactive in meeting those needs. In addition, the clients we serve are incredibly resilient — they inspire me every day to continue working hard to remove barriers because they have so much to contribute to the Chattanooga community.

P: ¿Puedes compartir un poco sobre tu trayectoria profesional?

R: Tengo un Doctorado de Derecho (JD) de la Universidad de Tennessee y soy una orgullosa ex-alumna de la Universidad de Tennessee en Chattanooga. Mi experiencia incluye tanto el ámbito legal como el trabajo enfocado en la comunidad, a través de mi labor con el Programa de Servicios Legales de Georgia y la Clínica Legal de la Universidad de Tennessee.

P: ¿Qué te llevó a unirte al equipo de La Paz? ¿Cuánto tiempo llevas en la organización?

R: Trabajo con La Paz desde 2022, donde tuve la oportunidad de desarrollar un programa de acceso legal para la organización. Me motivaba el deseo de obtener experiencia práctica y crear un modelo que pudiera replicarse en otros sistemas escolares, uno que tuviera un impacto significativo no solo en la comunidad en general, sino también en la vida de los estudiantes. Con mi experiencia apoyando a jóvenes inmigrantes, mi formación legal y mi comprensión de la interseccionalidad de los servicios comunitarios, este trabajo se sintió como un camino natural y con propósito.

P: Cuéntame un poco sobre el trabajo que realizas cada día. ¡No dudes en compartir una historia o anécdota que resalte tus aportes al equipo!

R: Dirijo el Programa de Patrocinio para el Estatus Especial de Inmigrante Juvenil (SIJS, por sus siglas en inglés), que apoya a jóvenes no acompañados en el sistema escolar del condado de Hamilton, conectándolos con abogados de inmigración que pueden guiarlos a través de la complejidad de sus casos legales. El derecho migratorio puede ser increíblemente difícil de navegar, y me apasiona ayudar a los estudiantes a entender los recursos legales disponibles para ellos. Los jóvenes con los que trabajo suelen ser de los más vulnerables, muchos han enfrentado traumas significativos. Es profundamente gratificante ser una presencia confiable en sus vidas, alguien en quien puedan apoyarse no solo para recibir orientación legal, sino también como una persona constante y solidaria dentro de su comunidad.

P: ¿Qué es lo que más te entusiasma sobre el futuro de La Paz y el trabajo que realizas?

R: Dar vida a este programa y ver cómo los estudiantes se benefician de él me da esperanza de que tendrán la oportunidad de construir vidas seguras y estables en los Estados Unidos. En cuanto a La Paz, me entusiasma nuestro crecimiento continuo y soy optimista sobre nuestra capacidad para llegar a más personas y generar un impacto aún mayor en la comunidad.

P: ¿Qué es una cosa que desearías que cada miembro de la comunidad de Chattanooga supiera sobre La Paz o sobre las personas a las que sirve?

R: Nuestro trabajo está guiado por las necesidades de nuestros clientes, y los programas que ofrecemos se moldean en función de los desafíos actuales que enfrenta la comunidad latina en Chattanooga. Nos mantenemos atentos y proactivos para responder a esas necesidades. Además, los clientes a los que servimos son increíblemente resilientes — me inspiran cada día a seguir trabajando arduamente para eliminar barreras, porque tienen muchísimo que aportar a la comunidad de Chattanooga.
