This Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month, we’re honored to shine a light on the staff members who embody our mission — to empower and engage Chattanooga’s Latino population through advocacy, education, and inclusion. Q: Can you share a little about your professional background? 

A: My background is in criminal justice and community engagement. I earned both my bachelor's and master’s degrees in Criminal Justice from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, where I also taught Introduction to the Criminal Justice System as a graduate instructor. I am also proud to say that I am a first-generation graduate and Mexican-American. My research throughout my graduate program focused on offender reintegration and systemic barriers faced by marginalized groups, which was the main focus of my master’s thesis. I also spent a considerable amount of time researching how the LGBT+ community interacts with those working in the criminal justice system. 

Currently at La Paz, I serve as the Education and Engagement Coordinator. I oversee community programs, such as ESL courses, computer literacy classes, and health and cultural events. I collaborate with schools, nonprofits, and local organizations to deliver resources, track outcomes, and strengthen community partnerships. 

I have also worked as a bilingual patient service representative at the Hamilton County Health Department, where I provided front-line support to multicultural and multilingual families. 

Another large aspect of my professional experience has been community building on UTC’s campus. I specifically worked with international students and bridged their access to resources, and helped with the adjustment of cultures and language. I have consistently focused on building relationships, advocating for equity, and facilitating access to resources, which I am very passionate about. 

Q: What led you to join the team at La Paz? How long have you been with the organization? 

A: I have only been with La Paz for a month, but the organization’s mission and vision hit incredibly personally for me. Both of my parents are immigrants who arrived here with a strong entrepreneurial spirit. Being that I am the first child, I had to learn the customs of the American people along with my parents, while also holding true to my Mexican roots and culture. During my short time at La Paz, I have witnessed individuals grow, one of them specifically being my mother. She had no access to education growing up, and seeing her do something as mundane as sending an email makes me really proud. 

I have also seen older individuals who have come into our computer classes with no confidence or experience and leave with their heads held high. You can see the growth among individuals, and it really makes you proud. Again, my goals are aligned with the mission and vision of La Paz, and I strive to achieve that mission and vision every day. 

Q: Tell me a little about the work you do each day. Feel free to share a story or vignette that highlights your contributions to the team! 

A: In my role as Education & Engagement Coordinator at La Paz Chattanooga, I coordinate a variety of educational opportunities, such as ESL and business workshops, as well as digital literacy programs. My work balances logistics like rosters, outreach, and partnerships with the rewarding experience of seeing participants gain confidence and independence.

One of the most meaningful highlights has been working with older adults who had never used a computer before. Guiding them through creating their very first email account was powerful, and what makes it even more rewarding is seeing my own mother participate in these classes. She never had the privilege of learning how to use a computer or even attending school consistently because she had to begin working at just nine years old. Watching her now grow more independent with technology has been fulfilling both personally and professionally.

Another memorable project I coordinated was a Learn to Ride program with White Oak Bicycle Co-op and Outdoor Chattanooga, where children not only learned how to ride bicycles but also received one to take home. Seeing their excitement as they pedaled on their own for the first time was a clear reminder of the joy and impact these programs create.

Beyond the events themselves, what I find most rewarding is building one-on-one relationships with participants. It means a lot to know that community members feel comfortable enough to reach out, joke with me, ask questions, or simply know me by name. Those connections make me feel close to the community and remind me that my role is not only about coordination but also about fostering trust and belonging.

Q: What excites you the most about the future of La Paz and the work you do? 

A: What excites me most about the future of La Paz is the opportunity to see our programs continue to grow and reach even more individuals in the community. Every time we expand a class or launch a new initiative, I see firsthand the difference it makes in people’s lives, and I look forward to being part of that continued growth.

I am especially excited about restarting the Women’s Group with Jessica Cliche. There are so many topics that are often considered culturally taboo, and this program would create a safe and comfortable setting where women can foster their curiosity, ask questions, and learn from one another. I believe this space for dialogue and support will have a lasting impact.

I am also excited to bring my own academic knowledge into my role at La Paz. My background in criminal justice is broad, and I see opportunities to foster discussions that help answer questions people may have, whether related to the justice system, social issues, or community advocacy.

For me, the future of La Paz means building on what we already do well while also creating new spaces for education, empowerment, and connection. That is what motivates me every day.

Q: What’s one thing you wish every member of the Chattanooga community knew about La Paz or the people it serves? 

A: One thing I wish every member of the Chattanooga community knew about La Paz and the people we serve is how beautiful and resilient our community truly is. We should not be seen as “other” but as an integral part of Chattanooga. The individuals we work with are hardworking, determined, and intelligent people who are often willing to risk their lives to succeed in a different country.

What makes our community unique is the way we hold onto our roots and traditions while also striving to build new opportunities here. That deserves to be celebrated. Every little win matters, because for many, those successes come after working harder than most to overcome barriers.

I believe that inclusion and equitable access for this community are paramount. If people would pause and pay attention, they would see the wonderful things we are capable of and how much stronger Chattanooga becomes when everyone is truly included and celebrated.

Q: Finish this sentence: When I’m not at work, I can be found ________________.

A: When I’m not at work, I can be found thrifting for my next favorite trinket or at McKay’s digging through the bins for a Funko Pop or a new book to enjoy. I also love spending time with my family over a good meal, and I can usually be found telling my cats how beautiful they are and how much I love them.

In many ways, it feels like I never stop advocating. Whether I am at La Paz or out running errands, I often find myself helping someone translate at a store checkout or answering questions people ask me. Advocacy and community connection are just part of who I am, both inside and outside of work.

In other instances, I am most likely unwinding at home and probably building a Lego set or taking care of my plants.

P: ¿Puedes compartir un poco sobre tu trayectoria profesional?

R: Mi formación es en justicia penal y participación comunitaria. Obtuve tanto mi licenciatura como mi maestría en Justicia Penal en la Universidad de Tennessee en Chattanooga, donde también enseñé la materia de Introducción al Sistema de Justicia Penal como instructora de posgrado. También me enorgullece decir que soy la primera en mi familia en graduarse y que soy mexicoamericana.

Durante mi maestría, enfoqué mi investigación en la reintegración de personas con antecedentes penales y las barreras sistémicas que enfrentan los grupos marginados, siendo este el tema central de mi tesis. También dediqué bastante tiempo a investigar cómo interactúa la comunidad LGBT+ con las personas que trabajan dentro del sistema de justicia penal.

Actualmente, en La Paz, soy Coordinadora de Educación y Participación Comunitaria. Estoy a cargo de programas comunitarios como los cursos de inglés (ESL), clases de alfabetización digital y eventos culturales y de salud. Colaboro con escuelas, organizaciones sin fines de lucro y otras entidades locales para ofrecer recursos, dar seguimiento a los resultados y fortalecer alianzas comunitarias.

También trabajé como representante bilingüe de servicios al paciente en el Departamento de Salud del Condado de Hamilton, donde brindé apoyo directo a familias multiculturales y multilingües.

Otra parte importante de mi experiencia profesional ha sido construir comunidad dentro del campus de UTC. Trabajé específicamente con estudiantes internacionales, ayudándoles a acceder a recursos y adaptarse a una nueva cultura e idioma. Siempre me he enfocado en construir relaciones, abogar por la equidad y facilitar el acceso a los recursos, algo que me apasiona profundamente.

P: ¿Qué te llevó a unirte al equipo de La Paz? ¿Cuánto tiempo llevas en la organización?

R: Llevo apenas un mes en La Paz, pero la misión y visión de la organización me tocó de manera muy personal. Mis dos padres son inmigrantes que llegaron a este país con un fuerte espíritu emprendedor. Siendo yo la hija mayor, tuve que aprender las costumbres de la cultura estadounidense junto con mis padres, mientras mantenía vivas mis raíces y mi cultura mexicana.

Durante este corto tiempo en La Paz, he sido testigo del crecimiento de muchas personas, y una de ellas, en particular, ha sido mi madre. Ella no tuvo acceso a la educación cuando era joven, y verla hacer algo tan “cotidiano” como enviar un correo electrónico me llena de orgullo.

También he visto a personas mayores llegar a nuestras clases de computación sin confianza ni experiencia, y salir con la cabeza en alto. Puedes ver su crecimiento, y eso realmente llena el corazón. Mis objetivos están completamente alineados con la misión y visión de La Paz, y todos los días trabajo con el compromiso de alcanzarlos.

P: Cuéntame un poco sobre el trabajo que haces cada día. ¡Siéntete libre de compartir una historia o anécdota que resalte tus aportes al equipo!

R: En mi rol como Coordinadora de Educación y Participación Comunitaria en La Paz Chattanooga, organizo una variedad de oportunidades educativas, como talleres de inglés, cursos de negocios y programas de alfabetización digital. Mi trabajo combina la logística —listas de asistencia, alcance comunitario y alianzas— con la parte más gratificante: ver a los participantes ganar confianza e independencia.

Uno de los momentos más significativos ha sido trabajar con personas mayores que nunca habían usado una computadora. Guiarlas para que creen su primera cuenta de correo electrónico ha sido muy poderoso. Aún más especial ha sido ver a mi propia madre participar en estas clases. Ella nunca tuvo el privilegio de aprender a usar una computadora ni de asistir a la escuela de manera consistente, ya que empezó a trabajar desde los nueve años. Verla ahora avanzar y volverse más independiente con la tecnología es profundamente satisfactorio tanto a nivel personal como profesional.

Otro proyecto memorable que coordiné fue el programa Learn to Ride en colaboración con White Oak Bicycle Co-op y Outdoor Chattanooga, donde niños no solo aprendieron a andar en bicicleta, sino que también se llevaron una a casa. Ver su emoción al pedalear por primera vez fue un recordatorio claro del impacto positivo que tienen estos programas.

Más allá de los eventos, lo que más valoro es construir relaciones uno a uno con los participantes. Me llena saber que los miembros de la comunidad se sienten cómodos acercándose, bromeando conmigo, haciendo preguntas o simplemente conociéndome por mi nombre. Esas conexiones me hacen sentir cercana a la comunidad y me recuerdan que mi rol no se trata solo de coordinar, sino también de fomentar la confianza y el sentido de pertenencia.

P: ¿Qué es lo que más te entusiasma sobre el futuro de La Paz y el trabajo que realizas?

R: Lo que más me entusiasma del futuro de La Paz es ver cómo nuestros programas siguen creciendo y llegando a más personas en la comunidad. Cada vez que ampliamos una clase o lanzamos una nueva iniciativa, puedo ver de primera mano la diferencia que hace en las vidas de las personas, y me emociona ser parte de ese crecimiento continuo.

Estoy especialmente emocionada por relanzar el Grupo de Mujeres junto a Jessica Cliche. Hay muchos temas que, culturalmente, aún se consideran tabú, y este programa ofrecerá un espacio seguro y cómodo donde las mujeres puedan explorar su curiosidad, hacer preguntas y aprender unas de otras. Creo que este espacio de diálogo y apoyo tendrá un impacto duradero.

También me emociona poder integrar mis conocimientos académicos en mi trabajo en La Paz. Mi formación en justicia penal es amplia, y veo oportunidades para fomentar conversaciones que ayuden a responder preguntas sobre el sistema de justicia, temas sociales o abogacía comunitaria.

Para mí, el futuro de La Paz significa seguir construyendo sobre lo que ya hacemos bien, mientras creamos nuevos espacios para la educación, el empoderamiento y la conexión. Eso es lo que me motiva cada día.

P: ¿Qué es algo que quisieras que cada miembro de la comunidad de Chattanooga supiera sobre La Paz o sobre las personas a las que sirve?

R: Me gustaría que cada persona en la comunidad de Chattanooga supiera cuán hermosa y resiliente es nuestra comunidad. No debemos ser vistos como “el otro,” sino como una parte integral de Chattanooga. Las personas con las que trabajamos son personas trabajadoras, decididas e inteligentes, que muchas veces están dispuestas a arriesgar sus vidas para tener éxito en un país distinto.

Lo que hace única a nuestra comunidad es la forma en que conservamos nuestras raíces y tradiciones, mientras luchamos por construir nuevas oportunidades aquí. Eso merece ser celebrado. Cada pequeño logro importa, porque para muchos, esos logros vienen después de haber superado más obstáculos que la mayoría.

Creo firmemente que la inclusión y el acceso equitativo para esta comunidad son fundamentales. Si las personas se detuvieran a mirar con atención, verían todo lo increíble que somos capaces de hacer, y cómo Chattanooga se fortalece cuando todos realmente somos incluidos y celebrados.

P: Termina esta frase: Cuando no estoy trabajando, se me puede encontrar ________________.

R: Cuando no estoy trabajando, se me puede encontrar buscando tesoros escondidos en tiendas de segunda mano o en McKay’s, escarbando entre los estantes en busca de un nuevo Funko Pop o un libro interesante para disfrutar. También me encanta pasar tiempo con mi familia compartiendo una buena comida, y usualmente estoy diciéndoles a mis gatos lo hermosos que son y cuánto los amo.

En muchos sentidos, siento que nunca dejo de abogar por los demás. Ya sea en La Paz o haciendo mandados, a menudo me encuentro ayudando a alguien a traducir en una tienda o respondiendo preguntas. La abogacía y la conexión con la comunidad son simplemente parte de quien soy, tanto dentro como fuera del trabajo.

En otras ocasiones, probablemente esté relajándome en casa, armando un set de Lego o cuidando de mis plantas.
