At La Paz Chattanooga, we believe a diverse community is a strong community. This Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month, we’re honored to shine a light on the staff members who embody our mission — to empower and engage Chattanooga’s Latino population through advocacy, education, and inclusion. Across this series, you’ll meet individuals whose passion, stories, and commitment help shape our work and the relationships we build.

Q: Can you share a little about your professional background? 

A: My professional journey began in college, where I worked as a translator and interpreter for an international agency. That role allowed me to travel across Latin America and deepen my appreciation for the richness and diversity of its people and cultures. It also confirmed something I already knew, that I wanted to build a career rooted in language, connection, and service. I went on to teach in Spain and later worked in medical administration in the U.S., continuing to bridge communities through language and cultural understanding.

I joined La Paz in early 2021 as a case manager, supporting families by connecting them with resources they needed to gain stability. In 2023, I transitioned to support the Education and Engagement Department, taking on the role of Program and Outreach Coordinator. Today, I serve as the Senior Outreach Coordinator, focusing on strengthening relationships with partners, volunteers, and the broader community.

Q: What led you to join the team at La Paz? How long have you been with the organization? 

A: I spent the majority of my childhood in Chile, raised by Colombian parents who instilled in me a deep love for Latin American culture and a strong sense of connection to others. When I returned to the U.S. for school, I struggled to adjust. I missed the warmth and community I had grown up with. Over time, I found pockets of the Latino community here and was heartbroken to see how many faced obstacles they should never have to face alone.

When I moved to Chattanooga, I quickly heard about La Paz and immediately wanted to get involved. At the time, it was the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, so I couldn’t volunteer in person. However, shortly after, I joined the team as a case manager, supporting families through the challenges of the pandemic and helping ensure they had access to food, housing, and basic necessities. I’ve been with La Paz ever since.

Q: Tell me a little about the work you do each day. Feel free to share a story or vignette that highlights your contributions to the team! 

A: Every day, I have the privilege of working alongside the volunteers and interns who help bring our mission to life. I also oversee our food pantry, which serves over 300 individuals each month. This program exists because of the collective effort of our partners and community members, and it's one of the most tangible ways we respond to local needs.

A significant part of my role involves building bridges between organizations, between people, and between resources. Whether I'm coordinating volunteers, meeting with local partners, or planning engagement events, the goal remains the same: to ensure that every family in our community feels seen, supported, and empowered.

Q: What excites you the most about the future of La Paz and the work you do? 

A: La Paz has grown so much, even in the short time I’ve been here, not just in size, but in impact. What excites me most is seeing members of our community, many of whom first came to us for support, now stepping up to lead, volunteer, and give back. That’s the kind of transformation we work for.

We serve an incredibly talented and resilient community, full of educators, artists, professionals, and visionaries. I’m excited to continue learning from them, working alongside them, and growing our volunteer network to reflect the full diversity and strength of our city.

Q: What’s one thing you wish every member of the Chattanooga community knew about La Paz or the people it serves? 

A: La Paz is more than an organization; it’s a community within a community. For those of us who work here, it’s not just a job. It’s a shared commitment. The people we serve are not strangers; they’re neighbors, friends, and family.

There’s something special about walking into La Paz. There’s a sense of belonging, a sense that you’re part of something meaningful. And that’s not something you can manufacture; it comes from the people, their stories, and the love they pour into this place every day.

Q: Finish this sentence: When I’m not at work, I can be found ________________.

A: Biking around Chattanooga, especially on days when I can ride to a restaurant or café. I love exploring the city through its food, supporting local spots, and giving my unofficial “food critic” reviews to friends. And when I’m not biking or eating, I’m usually planning my next trip. Traveling keeps me curious and inspired.

P: ¿Puedes compartir un poco sobre tu trayectoria profesional?

R: Mi trayectoria profesional comenzó en la universidad, donde trabajé como traductora e intérprete para una agencia internacional. Ese trabajo me permitió viajar por América Latina y profundizar mi aprecio por la riqueza y diversidad de sus pueblos y culturas. También confirmó algo que ya sabía: quería construir una carrera basada en el lenguaje, la conexión y el servicio. Luego enseñé en España y más adelante trabajé en administración médica en Estados Unidos, continuando con el trabajo de conectar comunidades a través del idioma y la comprensión cultural.

Me uní a La Paz a principios de 2021 como gestora de casos, apoyando a las familias al conectarlas con los recursos que necesitaban para alcanzar estabilidad. En 2023, hice la transición al Departamento de Educación y Participación, asumiendo el rol de Coordinadora de Programas y Alcance Comunitario. Hoy, me desempeño como Coordinadora Senior de Alcance Comunitario, enfocándome en fortalecer las relaciones con socios, voluntarios y la comunidad en general.

P: ¿Qué te llevó a unirte al equipo de La Paz? ¿Cuánto tiempo llevas en la organización?

R: Pasé la mayor parte de mi infancia en Chile, criada por padres colombianos que me inculcaron un profundo amor por la cultura latinoamericana y un fuerte sentido de conexión con los demás. Cuando regresé a Estados Unidos para estudiar, me costó adaptarme. Extrañaba el calor humano y la comunidad con la que había crecido. Con el tiempo, encontré pequeños espacios de la comunidad latina aquí, y me rompía el corazón ver cuántas personas enfrentaban obstáculos que nunca deberían afrontar solas.

Cuando me mudé a Chattanooga, escuché sobre La Paz casi de inmediato y quise involucrarme. En ese momento, estábamos en plena pandemia de COVID-19, así que no podía ser voluntaria en persona. Sin embargo, poco después me uní al equipo como gestora de casos, apoyando a las familias durante los desafíos de la pandemia y ayudando a garantizar que tuvieran acceso a alimentos, vivienda y necesidades básicas. Desde entonces, he estado en La Paz.

P: Cuéntame un poco sobre el trabajo que haces cada día. ¡Siéntete libre de compartir una historia o anécdota que resalte tus aportes al equipo!

R: Cada día tengo el privilegio de trabajar junto a los voluntarios y pasantes que ayudan a hacer realidad nuestra misión. También superviso nuestra despensa de alimentos, que atiende a más de 300 personas cada mes. Este programa existe gracias al esfuerzo colectivo de nuestros socios y miembros de la comunidad, y es una de las formas más tangibles en las que respondemos a las necesidades locales.

Una parte importante de mi rol es construir puentes: entre organizaciones, entre personas y entre recursos. Ya sea coordinando voluntarios, reuniéndome con aliados locales o planificando eventos de participación, el objetivo sigue siendo el mismo: asegurarnos de que cada familia en nuestra comunidad se sienta vista, apoyada y empoderada.

P: ¿Qué es lo que más te entusiasma sobre el futuro de La Paz y el trabajo que realizas?

R: La Paz ha crecido muchísimo, incluso en el poco tiempo que llevo aquí, no solo en tamaño, sino en impacto. Lo que más me entusiasma es ver a los miembros de nuestra comunidad —muchos de los cuales vinieron inicialmente en busca de apoyo— ahora asumir roles de liderazgo, ser voluntarios y devolver a la comunidad. Esa es la transformación por la que trabajamos.

Servimos a una comunidad increíblemente talentosa y resiliente, llena de educadores, artistas, profesionales y visionarios. Me emociona seguir aprendiendo de ellos, trabajar a su lado y seguir ampliando nuestra red de voluntariado para reflejar la diversidad y fortaleza de nuestra ciudad.

P: ¿Qué es algo que quisieras que cada miembro de la comunidad de Chattanooga supiera sobre La Paz o sobre las personas a las que sirve?

R: La Paz es más que una organización; es una comunidad dentro de otra comunidad. Para quienes trabajamos aquí, no es solo un empleo. Es un compromiso compartido. Las personas a las que servimos no son extrañas; son vecinos, amigos y familia.

Hay algo especial en entrar a La Paz. Hay un sentido de pertenencia, una sensación de que eres parte de algo significativo. Y eso no se puede fabricar; nace de las personas, de sus historias y del amor que vierten en este lugar todos los días.

P: Termina esta frase: Cuando no estoy trabajando, se me puede encontrar ________________.

R: Andando en bicicleta por Chattanooga, especialmente en días en los que puedo ir a un restaurante o café. Me encanta explorar la ciudad a través de su comida, apoyar los negocios locales y darles a mis amigos mis reseñas “críticas gastronómicas” no oficiales. Y cuando no estoy en bicicleta o comiendo, normalmente estoy planeando mi próximo viaje. Viajar me mantiene curiosa e inspirada.
