At La Paz Chattanooga, we believe a diverse community is a strong community. This Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month, we’re honored to shine a light on the staff members who embody our mission — to empower and engage Chattanooga’s Latino population through advocacy, education, and inclusion. Q: Can you share a little about your professional background? 

A: I am a first-generation high school and college graduate. I graduated from Dalton State College in May 2019 with my Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, and in December of the same year, I graduated with my Master’s in Social Work from Barry University in Miami. 

Q: What led you to join the team at La Paz? How long have you been with the organization? 

A: I have been with La Paz since May of 2021, so next year it will be five years with this amazing organization. With my social work degree, I always knew that I wanted to give back and help the Latino Community. I heard about La Paz, and I loved their mission and vision. 

La Paz has given me the privilege of helping and guiding the Latino community — advocating on their behalf and connecting them with the resources they need to thrive. I often think about how much it would have meant if an organization like La Paz had existed for my own family when we first moved to the United States. One of the things I love most about my role is taking the burden off young children who feel pressured to translate, explain, and carry adult responsibilities for their parents. No child should have to carry that weight, and it’s an honor to step in and help lift it.

Q: Tell me a little about the work you do each day. Feel free to share a story or vignette that highlights your contributions to the team! 

A: When I first started at La Paz, I was a general case manager. Last year, I was promoted to Senior Case Manager, and that role has shifted and expanded my responsibilities in many ways. 

On Mondays, I lead check-ins with the rest of the case managers and front desk to review active cases, talk through upcoming priorities, and collaborate on new approaches when challenges arise. It’s my goal to help ensure that everyone on the team feels supported and has the tools they need to serve our clients well. 

From Tuesday through Thursday, I still meet with some clients directly, assisting with needs like medical bills, filing documents, answering questions, and connecting clients to the right resources. 

Fridays are dedicated to follow-up work: catching up on emails, evaluating referrals that we have received throughout the week, making sure grant requirements are up to date, and checking in with clients to keep cases moving forward. 

Q: What excites you the most about the future of La Paz and the work you do? 

A: I always look forward to coming in to work each day and meeting new people. It’s important to me to bring a sense of calm to the community, especially during times of change. I love knowing that the community we serve feels informed, supported, and connected through La Paz. 

I’m also grateful for the opportunities for growth that La Paz has offered during my time here, one of which is my chance to participate in Leadership Chattanooga. I’m excited to graduate from the program next year, and I am very thankful to La Paz for encouraging me to pursue the program as I looked to enhance my networking skills. 

Q: What’s one thing you wish every member of the Chattanooga community knew about La Paz or the people it serves? 

A: I want the community to know more about La Paz and the services that we bring to Chattanooga. A lot of the time, clients only come to us because they need to see a case manager — but we also offer all sorts of ongoing classes and workshops created by our education team. They do a wonderful job creating programs that are really meaningful to our clients, and I would love for more people to know about their work.

P: ¿Puedes contarnos un poco sobre tu experiencia profesional?

R: Soy la primera en mi familia en graduarse de la preparatoria y de la universidad. Me gradué de Dalton State College en mayo de 2019 con una licenciatura en Trabajo Social, y en diciembre del mismo año obtuve mi maestría en Trabajo Social de Barry University en Miami.

P: ¿Qué te llevó a unirte al equipo de La Paz? ¿Cuánto tiempo llevas en la organización?

R: Estoy con La Paz desde mayo de 2021, así que el próximo año cumpliré cinco años en esta increíble organización. Con mi título en trabajo social, siempre supe que quería retribuir y apoyar a la comunidad latina. Escuché sobre La Paz y me encantó su misión y visión.

La Paz me ha dado el privilegio de ayudar y guiar a la comunidad latina: abogar por ellos y conectarlos con los recursos que necesitan para salir adelante. A menudo pienso en lo importante que habría sido para mi familia tener una organización como La Paz cuando llegamos por primera vez a los Estados Unidos. Una de las cosas que más me gusta de mi rol es poder aliviar la carga que sienten muchos niños al tener que traducir, explicar y asumir responsabilidades de adultos para sus padres. Ningún niño debería cargar con ese peso, y es un honor poder intervenir y ayudar a levantarlo.

P: Cuéntame un poco sobre el trabajo que realizas cada día. ¡Siéntete libre de compartir una historia o anécdota que resalte tus aportes al equipo!

R: Cuando comencé en La Paz, era gestora de casos general. El año pasado fui promovida a Gestora de Casos Senior, y ese puesto ha ampliado mis responsabilidades en muchos sentidos.

Los lunes, lidero reuniones con el resto de los gestores de casos y el personal de recepción para revisar los casos activos, hablar sobre prioridades y colaborar en nuevas estrategias cuando surgen desafíos. Mi meta es asegurarme de que todos en el equipo se sientan apoyados y tengan las herramientas necesarias para servir bien a nuestros clientes.

De martes a jueves, todavía me reúno con algunos clientes directamente, ayudando con necesidades como facturas médicas, presentación de documentos, resolución de dudas y conexión con recursos adecuados.

Los viernes los dedico al trabajo de seguimiento: responder correos, evaluar referencias que recibimos durante la semana, asegurarme de que los requisitos de las subvenciones estén actualizados, y hacer seguimiento con los clientes para que sus casos sigan avanzando.

P: ¿Qué es lo que más te emociona sobre el futuro de La Paz y el trabajo que realizas?

R: Siempre espero con entusiasmo cada día de trabajo y la oportunidad de conocer nuevas personas. Para mí es importante transmitir tranquilidad a la comunidad, especialmente en tiempos de cambio. Me encanta saber que la comunidad a la que servimos se siente informada, apoyada y conectada a través de La Paz.

También estoy muy agradecida por las oportunidades de crecimiento que La Paz me ha brindado durante mi tiempo aquí, como la oportunidad de participar en el programa Leadership Chattanooga. Estoy emocionada por graduarme del programa el próximo año, y agradezco mucho a La Paz por motivarme a participar mientras buscaba mejorar mis habilidades de conexión profesional.

P: ¿Qué es una cosa que desearías que cada miembro de la comunidad de Chattanooga supiera sobre La Paz o sobre las personas a las que sirve?

R: Quiero que la comunidad conozca más sobre La Paz y los servicios que ofrecemos en Chattanooga. Muchas veces, los clientes vienen a nosotros únicamente porque necesitan ver a un gestor de casos —pero también ofrecemos todo tipo de clases y talleres continuos creados por nuestro equipo de educación. Hacen un trabajo maravilloso creando programas que realmente significan mucho para nuestros clientes, y me encantaría que más personas conocieran su labor.
